Film Screening: The Class (2008)

Speaker(s): C茅cile Tresfels
This Palme d鈥橭r winning French film is based on the novel written in 2006 by Fran莽ois Begaudeau entitled Entre les murs, translating literally to 鈥渨ithin the walls.鈥 The novel is a semi-autobiographical account of the author鈥檚 experience as a French language and literature teacher in a middle school in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. The film explores the complex relationships between the teacher and a group of 鈥減roblem children,鈥 the notion of authority and respect, and the issues arising from the diverse cultures and ethnicities represented in the classroom. Deeply moving, it stages the French education system under an original and humanist angle.
