Applied Mathematics graduate student Shayna Bennett will represent ϰٿ at the University of California finals on May 7.

ϰٿ Ph.D. Student Wins UC Grad Slam Competition

Applied Mathematics graduate student Shayna Bennett won first place at the University of California’s finals today (May 7).

Bennett presented her dissertation research, “A New Tool to Fight Invasive Species,” in just three minutes and won $7,000 and the systemwide trophy — known as the Slammy — the campus’s first time winning the top prize.

ϰٿ Alums, Students Earn Prestigious Fellowships

A half-dozen ϰٿ students and alumni are recipients of significant fellowships to help support their graduate education.

“We’re extremely proud of our undergraduate and graduate students and alumni who have earned prestigious fellowships,” Vice Provost and Dean Chris Kello said. “These awards will allow scholars to embark on or continue their graduate-level research opportunities.”

$2.2M NIH Grant Designed to Produce Highly Trained, Diverse Ph.D. Workforce

A five-year, $2.2 million training grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will assist ϰٿ with the development of diverse cohorts of doctoral students in interdisciplinary biomedical disciplines.

Twelve trainees each academic year will benefit from NIH’s longstanding Graduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement Program, or G-RISE.

Vice Provost for Academic Personnel Teenie Matlock has been honored with the for Academic Leadership by the Women in Technology Initiative at the University of California.

Month of Giving Surpasses Fundraising Goal

During December, the initiative tripled the campus’s goal of raising $50,000. The final tally: $163,000 raised for a variety of campus initiatives and programs.

The fundraising initiative has traditionally been held on a single day, but in 2020 it was expanded to one month with an online focus and social media-driven effort because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
